First GFSI Recognized Food Program in Canada

CanadaGAP is a food safety program developed to promote Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) for fruits and vegetables. It is a program developed in Canada that promotes Good Agricultural Practices for fruit and vegetable suppliers. The certification program, which is based on Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point principles, applies to the production, packing, storage, repacking, wholesale, and brokerage of fresh fruits and vegetables. The program is benchmarked to and officially recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). Why do I need CanadaGAP Certification?

Many buyers require CanadaGAP certification for their suppliers including several prominent retail chains and processors.

How do I get Certified?

  2. Implement your program
  3. Enrol in the certification program
  4. Choose a certification body
  5. Choose the appropriate certification option
  6. Submit the completed enrolment form
  7. Prepare for your audit

Certification Options

A1: Individual Supplier – 4-year certification cycle, first-year audit to be completed by 3rd party Certification Body (CB), with random audits possible during 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year of the cycle. If not selected for a random audit, must complete sworn declaration and self-assessment annually which will be reviewed by 3rd party CB. (Not GFSI recognized)

A2: Individual Supplier – 4-year certification cycle, first-year audit to be completed by 3rd party Certification Body (CB), if selected for a random audit, the scheduled audit date will be four years from the random audit date. If not selected for a random audit, must complete sworn declaration and self-assessment annually which will be reviewed by 3rd party CB. (Not GFSI recognized)

B: Group Certification – Annual Certification, the group must perform internal audits of all members, with oversight by 3rd party CB, and group members are subject to sampling audits by the CB. Design is based on GLOBALG.A.P requirements. (GFSI recognized)

C: Individual Supplier involved in production, packing, or storage – Annual on-site audits by 3rd party CB. (GFSI recognized)

D: Individual Supplier involved in repacking, wholesaling, or brokerage – Annual on-site audits by 3rd party CB. (GFSI recognized)
