CFIA’s Updated Compliance and Enforcement Policy Now in Effect

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced on October 30, 2020, that it would update its Compliance and Enforcement Policy, which would come into effect on November 1, 2020.

The updated policy will drive strategic, consistent, fair, and transparent compliance and enforcement approach, which will allow the CFIA to deliver its mandate, employing a compliance continuum.

Changes to the Policy:

Updates to the policy included changes such as the new Safe Food for Canadians Regulations and the updated Administrative Monetary Penalties (AMPs). Updates were also made to reflect the evolving nature of the CFIA’s operating environment, such as online services through My CFIA.

Additional updates include:

•    Alignment with the CFIA’s official policy template
•    Explanation of inspection versus investigation under the Roles
and Responsibilities section
•    Removal of Department of Justice roles
•    Inclusion of an Inquiries section
