Willie Pelzer (1934-2013)

Withold “Willie” Pelzer, 79 years of age, passed away at the Mackenzie Health hospital on Friday, May 17 with his family at his side. Willie was born in Lemberg, Poland. He left Europe for Lethbridge Alberta at the age of 17 to work the sugar beet fields. He was immediately struck with the limited way in which Canadian food grains were being used. With this inspiration, he began experimenting with rolled oats, honey and other natural ingredients developing a new line of food products. Ultimately, Willie came up with what today is known as granola. In 1970, Willie started the family business, Sunny Crunch Foods Ltd., and under his leadership as president and CEO the company grew to have worldwide distribution, working in conjunction with Canada’s largest retailers. Willie was an honorable, kind hearted, sincere and extremely generous man. He loved to travel, especially on vacations with his family.

Willie is survived by his loving wife Josephine “Joy”, of 53 years of marriage, beloved and faithful son Richard, adored daughter in law Lynn and cherished granddaughters Chloe and Sydney.
