September 3, 2013 By

CFIAs food labelling modernization process has been proposed to align with Safe Food for Canadians Act and reduce red tape for industry.

CFIA has proposed to introduce a new food labelling system to align with the new Safe Food for Canadian’s Act. From June to December 2013, CFIA will launch the process to engage and gather issues from industry to assist with CFIAs food labelling modernization. The final report on recommendations and implementation proposal is scheduled for December 2014 – June 2015. The new modernized food labelling system will include 4 areas of focus:

  1. Revised roles and responsibilities between government, industry, and consumers
  2. Regulations that will consider global standards and approaches
  3. Policy and program development that will be based on risk and will improve compliance
  4. Improved service delivery by introducing standardized inspections that will be based on risk and prevention

The overall focus is on all foods including imported, domestic, food for further manufacturing, and retail consumer packaged or bulk products. Food labelling activities that fall under the mandate of other government departments will not be included in the new food labelling modernization program.
