The term ‘natural health product’ calls to mind ideas of safe and harmonious remedies that do not carry the kind of adverse effects that we have come to expect from conventional drugs. Although many of these alternative medicines have a long history of safe use, their current formulations may pose a hidden risk to consumers.
Many of these natural products may contain undeclared substances, such as prescription medications or other potentially dangerous ingredients. Using such products, unaware of this risk, may end up causing serious health problems. This ‘adulteration’ of natural products has become an increasing problem world-wide, especially with the products of higher demand. Some examples include natural products for weight loss, body building, erectile dysfunction, sleep problems, inflammatory conditions, and treatment of diabetes.
The review and authorization process instituted by Health Canada aims to reduce these risks through a thorough assessment of the NHPs sold in Canada, and to create more awareness of the possible contaminants that can be found. The effects of unsafe adulterants in NHPs are a serious issue, and anyone who experiences adverse reactions should report their symptoms to Health Canada. Natural products are a valuable tool in health and well-being, and it is the right of every consumer to have a choice of effective, but especially safe, remedies for their personal health.
