Health Canada Issues Draft Warning Letter for Glucomannan

 

On January 26th, 2010, Health Canada’s Natural Health Products Directorate (NHPD) has issued a draft warning letter concerning Natural Health Products containing glucomannan, an ingredient authorized for the purposes of weight management, cholesterol management, and the treatment of constipation.  Based on international adverse reaction reports, taking glucomannan with insufficient fluids can result in choking and/or blockage of the throat, esophagus, or intestine.

As per the glucomannan monographs (available for capsule and powder forms), products containing glucomannan must be appropriately labelled with cautionary information.  The following label information is required:

Cautions and Warnings
Consult a healthcare practitioner prior to use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
Consult a healthcare practitioner prior to use if you have diabetes

Contraindication
Do not use if you have difficulty swallowing

Known Adverse Reaction
If you experience chest pain, vomiting or difficulty swallowing or breathing after taking this product, seek immediate medical attention

Directions for Use
Take (or mix) this product with at least 8 ounces (a full glass) of water or other fluid.  Taking this product with insufficient liquid may result in choking and/or blockage of the throat, esophagus or intestine.  Do not take immediately before going to bed.
